Eagles, Knights split cross country wins

RUSSELL — It was a muddy day on course for the Youngsville and Eisenhower cross country teams during a split decision Tuesday at Eisenhower High School.

The Ike girls were a 15-50 winner due to the Eagles not having enough runners to score while the Eagles boys earned their first win of the season with a 15-50 decision over the Knights. Like the Youngsville girls, the Eisenhower boys did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.

“It was a muddy course today,” said Youngsville coach Melissa Sabella. “Despite that, we had some tremendous performances today by everyone.”

Among those tremendous performances were Youngsville girls runners Cassy Britton and Sarah Sabella. The teammates swept the top two spots in the girls race, finishing in 23:00 and 23:19, respectively. A trio of Eisenhower runners rounded out the top five with Kierra Wismar third in 24:40, Madison Cathcart fourth in 25:07 and Peyton Kellogg fifth in 27:55

The remainder of the field included four Ike runners in Lilly Cathcart (sixth, 31:12), Alexis Christensen (seventh, 31:35), Brooke Anderson (ninth, 32:48) and Kendra Chase (10th, 34:11). In between that quartet of Knights was Youngsville’s Elizabeth Hollis who was eighth with a time of 32:26.

Much like the girls race, it was a sweep at the top for the Youngsville boys as Eagles runners claimed the top-three positions on the podium. Leading the way across the line with the race win was Mike Bojaczko with a winning time of 21:10. Tim Hazeltine was runnerup in 22:08 and Logan McDonald was third in 24:01.

Eisenhower was led by the fourth- and fifth-place finishes of Max Edes and T.J. McCamey while teammate Jay Unida was seventh. Rounding out Youngsville’s winning effort were Trenton Farrell in sixth and Tristan Coccarro in eighth.

The Eagles runners will return to the course on Thursday when they travel to Corry.
