Sheffield boys hoops falls at St. Marys

ST. MARYS — St. Marys used a 14-5 second quarter to pull away from Sheffield in a 46-30 Allegheny Mountain League crossover game on Monday at St. Marys High School. “(We) had opportunities, just couldn’t capitalize,” said Sheffield coach Jordan Copley, whose Wolverines are 1-14 after their fifth-straight loss. Lashawn Williams had 4 points and Aamond Bowman 3 for Sheffield in a first quarter in which they trailed just 13-11. Colby Barr scored 9 second-half points, including 7 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. Ben Paul led St. Marys (7-9) with 20 ...

Cameron County tops Sheffield, 33-7

EMPORIUM — Cameron County is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in District 9’s Region 3 after a 33-7 home win on Friday over Sheffield. The Raiders scored off an interception to open the game, and on the ground and through the air to lead 20-0 by halftime. Quarterback Ryder Brown completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jake Narby right before the half. But after losing 51-0 to the Raiders a season ago, Sheffield opened eyes with its physicality, despite falling to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in Region 3. “Their coach said we shocked them with how physical we were,” said Sheffield coach Mike Barr. ...

Sheffield football falls short of second win

COUDERSPORT — Sheffield moved the ball against Coudersport on Friday, but couldn’t move it far enough to beat the Falcons in their season opener at Coudersport Area Recreational Park. In the end, Coudy quarterback Colemen Freeman did, throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the Falcons’ 26-13 District 9 Region 3 victory. Sheffield quarterback Colby Barr scored on a 20-yard run and Hayden Holden added a 5-yard rushing score before the half, but the offense couldn’t finish for most of the night. That had something to do with the Falcons forcing four Sheffield turnovers, ...

Otto hands Sheffield first loss

DUKE CENTER — Sheffield’s football team started out on Friday where it left off last week, opening the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown pass on its second possession from Colby Barr to Darrell Barno at Otto-Eldridge/Oswayo Valley. Both teams entered at 1-0, but the season-opening victories weren’t created equally as Sheffield’s win over Bucktail was its first in five seasons. Otto, on the other hand, had defeated Sheffield 11 straight times dating back to 2013, and dropped 50 points on Coudersport to start 1-0 this season. OEOV answered Sheffield’s opening score on Friday ...

Lady Wolverines earn first volleyball win of season

TIONESTA — Sheffield’s volleyball team improved to 1-2 on Friday with a 3-0 at Forest Area. “We have tried so many lineups on varsity trying to see what makes us the most competitive team,” said Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay, whose Wolverines won 25-17, 25-9, 25-16. “This year is going to be full of growing pains as we slowly get our younger athletes and less-experienced upperclassmen acclimated to the faster pace of play from JV to varsity. It’s hard because, if this was just a regular year, you could look at our underclassmen and see what you have to build on and where you ...

Sheffield unable to host girls basketball; agreements before school board tonight

An item on the agenda for the Warren County School District Monday night board meeting could spell the end of the girls basketball program at Sheffield Area High School. There are two items on the agenda related to the school's girls basketball team. The one that, if approved, would create a cooperative agreement between Sheffield and Warren high schools for girls basketball, says, “the enrollment of Sheffield Area Middle High School is insufficient to sponsor and compete in the sport of girls' varsity and junior varsity basketball.” According to that document, the cooperative ...
