White Cane Foundation plans vision screening

Following a successful spring vision screening event that helped dozens of local residents receive affordable eyeglasses, the White Cane Foundation is partnering once again with Global Vision 2020 to offer another community vision screening opportunity on Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ, 1710 Pennsylvania Avenue East, Warren.

More than 25 participants received affordable custom reading glasses during the inaugural screening held this spring, highlighting the ongoing need for accessible vision resources throughout Warren County.

The event is open to everyone, with no appointment necessary. Participants will receive a basic vision screening and, if appropriate, can be fitted for a pair of custom reading glasses on-site for just $20. There will also be a limited number of custom sunglasses available as well.

Organizers stress that cost should not prevent anyone from attending.

“If someone needs help but cannot afford the cost of the glasses, we encourage them to come anyway,” said Bob Willman, President of the White Cane Foundation. “Thanks to generous community support, a limited number of sponsorships will be available for those experiencing financial hardship.”

The June event follows a well-attended screening held earlier this year and is part of an ongoing effort to increase access to affordable vision support throughout Warren County.

“We were thrilled with the response from our first event,” said Willman. “Many people left with improved vision and a renewed ability to read, work, and enjoy daily activities. The need in our community is real, and we are excited to provide another opportunity for individuals and families to receive this valuable service.”

“At Emanuel United Church of Christ, we believe the church is called to be more than a place people visit on Sunday mornings,” said Rev. Melissa McLean, Pastor of Emanuel United Church of Christ and the foundation’s secretary. “Christ calls us to serve our neighbors in practical and meaningful ways, and this vision screening event is one way we can live out that calling. We were encouraged by the response to our first event and are excited to once again open our doors to the community to help meet a real need.”

The partnership with Global Vision 2020 represents a long-term commitment to improving access to basic vision care. Through specialized training and equipment, White Cane Foundation volunteers are able to conduct non-clinical vision screenings and assemble custom reading glasses on-site.

Participants who currently wear bifocals or have known eye conditions may not be eligible for glasses through the program. If volunteers determine they cannot meet a participant’s vision needs, referrals to local optometrists will be provided.

Organizers emphasize that the event provides non-clinical vision screenings only. Screenings are conducted by trained volunteers and are not medical eye examinations. Volunteers are not licensed optometrists or medical providers, and no diagnoses, treatments, or prescriptions are provided. The glasses available through the program are custom reading glasses and are not prescription eyewear.

Participants are encouraged to consult a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist for comprehensive eye exams, diagnosis, or treatment of any vision or eye health concerns.

Community members are encouraged to attend regardless of income level. There is no financial qualification process, and everyone is welcome. A limited number of sponsorships are available for individuals who are unable to afford the cost of glasses.

For many residents, clear vision is often delayed due to the rising costs of healthcare and everyday living expenses. This program seeks to remove that barrier and ensure that affordable vision support remains available within the Warren County community.
