Stoddard, Damore, Sandberg put to the test

There is no question that there is some great golf in the area and a trio of golfers put proof to that on both the state and national level earlier this week.

Conewango Valley Country Club’s Nate Sandberg competed in the region’s qualifier for the 113th Pennsylvania Amateur Championship at Chartiers Country Club on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Russell’s Austin Stoddard and Warren’s Braddock Damore played in the qualifier for the Sunnehanna Invitational, one of the top amateur tournaments in the United States.

In order to advance to the next round of the state amateur, shooting par was necessary with the last spot moving on going to a six-way tie with 70.

After a birdie on the second hole, Sandberg was in the running and two bogeys brought his score to 36 after the front. The back nine gave Sandberg a little more trouble with three bogeys and a double, but on No. 18 he scored an eagle on the 540-yard par 5.

He finished the day missing the cut with a 74, going 4-over, but was just two strokes off of being one of the alternates. The low round was a 67 carded by Tim Novic of Southpointe Golf Club, making six birdies in his round to take home the medalist honors and advance in the state amateur.

While Sandberg held his own with the state’s best, both Stoddard and Damore battled for a spot in one of the top amateur events in the country, the Sunnehanna Invitational.

The Sunnehanna Invitational is entering its 85th year of competition and has featured several of the game’s greatest, only being outdone by the U.S. Amateur. Arnold Palmer was 18 when he won the event in 1948 and Ben Crenshaw, Webb Simpson, Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa added their names to the impressive list of champions.

However, what is more impressive is the list of greats the championship eluded like Jack Nicklaus, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods.

In order for Stoddard and Damore to enter the prestigious event they needed to qualify on the A.W. Tillinghast-designed par-70 track in Johnstown this past Sunday.

Making the cut required some masterful work on the course with the final qualifying spot going to scores 3-under and better. The winning score was Hunter Swidzinski of Renfrew with a 5-under 65, playing bogey-free with five birdies.

Stoddard and Damore played fantastic golf, but the bar to make the cut required near perfection.

The pair were only a stroke apart, but finished nearly 10 places apart with all of the ties. Stoddard went 3-over, shooting a 73 for a tie at 54th and his round included a birdie on No. 13. Damore finished 4-over with a 74, but his score tied at 63rd and included a birdie on No. 7.

Starting at $4.00/week.
