Regional, state-wide elections run up million dollar tabs

When it comes to elections, it’s always good practice to follow the money.

So here’s a look at what’s been spent on the regional races you’ll see on Tuesday’s ballot.

CONGRESS

The 15th District in Pennsylvania is solidly red.

Campaign finance records support that argument.

The most recent report indicates that Congressman Glenn Thompson has taken in over $1.6 million since the beginning of the year and expended all but $329,0281 of the total, according to Federal Election Commission records.

His funding is roughly split 50/50 between funds from individuals and funds from various political committees.

Thompson’s opponent, Robert Williams, has not filed any publicly available reports with the Federal Election Commission.

STATE SENATE

Senator Scott Hutchinson’s most recent filing has not yet been posted but it shows a over 100 percent advantage in funding – nearly $25,000 in cash on hand, raised and spent to Stromyer’s most recent report which indicates less than $10,000 total.

Hutchinson has raised about $6,000 according to the most recent available filing but brought over $14,000 forward from 2019.

Over half of Stromyer’s funding came from a $2,500 contribution from a healthcare union.

STATE

REPRESENTATIVE

Kathy Rapp is seeking another term in the state House but that hasn’t kept outside money from coming in to her campaign.

More than $7,000 of the $12,000 generated has come from various industry groups from Delaware, Indiana, Ohio, Washington D.C. as well as some based in Pennsylvania, including National Fuel Gas’ PAC, Operators for Skill PAC out of Harrisburg, PAW Pac out of Hershey and an energy services PAC out of Reading.

STATE-WIDE RACES

Contests for attorney general, auditor general and treasurer can easily run into the millions.

For example, the most recent filings in the race for Attorney General show that incumbent Josh Shapiro has raised over $4.8 million while the challenger, Heather Heidelbaugh, has raised nearly $2 million.

In the race for treasurer, incumbent Joe Torsella has maintained a $1 million balance until the most recent reporting period, during which his campaign spent $1.6 million. Republican challenger Stacy Garrity has raised roughly $250,000.

For auditor general, Democrat Nina Ahmad has raised nearly $1.4 million while the total for her challenger, Tim Defoor, isn’t clear in the records available.

Starting at $3.50/week.
