Kalu’s Shoe Drive runs through Dec. 15
If you have an extra pair of shoes, New Hope Assistance Dogs would be happy to take them for a good cause.
Kalu’s Shoe Drive Fundraiser continues through Dec. 15. Gently worn, used and new shoes can be donated at the Darwin R. Barker Library at 7 Day St., Fredonia; at Dunkirk Public Library at 536 Central Ave. Dunkirk; and at New Hope Assistance Dogs at 3 Scott Run Road, Warren.
Funds raised from Kalu’s Shoe Drive will go toward the cost of a service dog, Lucy, from New Hope Assistance Dogs in Warren, PA.
New Hope Assistance Dogs is a non-profit organization that trains and places service dogs for people with a variety of disabilities, including children and veterans. Dogs like Lucy require a lot of time and training, which is what necessitated the shoe drive for financial assistance.
Funds2Orgs — an organization that works with micro-entrepreneurs to help create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited — will issue a check based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of small business partners.
“We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Karen Garcia, Lucy’s handler. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money to cover Lucy’s cost, and also we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
