Drake Well Museum “Seeing Double” with new exhibit

TITUSVILLE – Grab a pair of 3D glasses and head to Drake Well Museum and Park for a unique exhibit experience this spring and summer! Beginning Saturday, Drake Well Museum will display a component of the 2023 international exhibit Seeing Double: Pennsylvania’s Industrial Revolution in 3D, running throughout the summer season.

Seeing Double is a serial exhibit showcasing Pennsylvania’s rich industrial history through antique stereo photography. Drake Well Museum’s portion of the exhibit will focus on the petroleum industry; additional components of the exhibit will be displayed at three other museums within the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) including the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton, Cornwall Iron Furnace in Cornwall, and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. The exhibit at Drake Well is included with general admission to the site; 3D anaglyph glasses are provided for visitors.

A special webinar will be presented by Dr. Richard Healey, the creator of the original exhibit, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, in the lobby of Drake Well Museum for visitors to enjoy. If you are unable to come to the Museum that day, the presentation can be viewed at the following Zoom address: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85790257416.

The exhibit originates from a 2023 show curated by Dr. Richard Healey at the Royal Geographical Society in London. A distinguished geographer at the University of Portsmouth, Dr. Healey has dedicated much of his research to Pennsylvania’s historic rail, iron, oil, and anthracite coal industries. Over the years, he cultivated a sizable collection of 19th- and 20th-century stereo views–popular, inexpensive photographic novelties that originally offered three-dimensional images through a hand-held stereoscope.

To bring these rare glimpses of Pennsylvania’s industrial past to a modern museum audience, Dr. Healey transformed the antique stereo views into anaglyphs. Exhibit-goers will use red and blue offset glasses–made popular by 3D movies in the 1970s–to step back in time and experience a historical overview of the industries that built Pennsylvania.
