Naming application, ordinance OK’d by Planning Commission

The Warren Planning Commission held a brief meeting Wednesday morning, unanimously approving both a naming application and ordinance framework aimed at guiding how public spaces are named and dedicated.

The primary focus of the meeting centered on the long-developing application process and ordinance, which commission members have been refining since late 2025. Both measures are designed to establish a clear and consistent approach to naming city-owned properties, trafficways, structures and public facilities.

The newly approved ordinance introduces a citizen-driven process, allowing city residents, property owners and community organizations to submit naming proposals. Applications would be required to include a fee, along with a petition containing signatures from Warren residents and property owners who support the request.

The initiative stems in part from recent public interest in renaming the Third Avenue bridge, which highlighted the need for a formalized and transparent procedure.

With the commission’s approval secured, the proposal will now advance to the City Council for consideration at its May meeting. Planning Commission members have been encouraged to attend the session to show support for the measure and to address any questions council members may have.

Starting at $3.50/week.
