Prep too much

Down a starter, Warren falls 4-1 at Betts Park

Already down a key starter, Warren lost four of five matches to Cathedral Prep on Tuesday at Betts Park.

At first singles, Finleigh Handzel defeated Warren’s Lucy Harrison 6-1, 6-2.

At second singles, Sophia Glance defeated Ella Card 6-2, 6-3.

Warren’s lone win was from Alannah Garza, who defeated Katie Kuhar 6-2, 7-5

At first doubles, Margaret Prichard and Lilly Buechert defeated Maddy McDunn and Sarah Harvey 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Lydia Beuchert and Eliza Kalner defeated Anna Courson and Grace Carlson 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.

“We went into this match knowing we had quite a challenge on our hands going up against last year’s state semifinalists and were down a key starter in second singles — Grace Carr — as she recovers from injury, but overall we were really impressed with the play today,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “All of the girls stepped up big with everyone bumping up slots in the lineup.

“Alannah Garza had the match of the day as she stepped into the third singles position, pulling off another big win for Warren,” he said. “She played some of her best tennis today, but what won her this match was that she was willing to make adjustments. Her game plan worked very well in the first, but when her opponent made a shift in set two, she found herself down 1-4 in the second. From here, she decided to slow down the pace, build the point, extend the rallies, and pulled off the comeback to close out the set and match… Alannah is peaking at the right time of season and we’re excited to see what she can do for us at the third singles position moving forward.

“Compared to the last time we played them, this was a night and day difference,” added Pellegrino. “Every match was competitive and our scores across the board have improved.”

Warren will be back in action Thursday as it takes on host Erie High at Frontier Park in a key Region 2 3A matchup.

Starting at $3.50/week.
