Dragons suffer 6-5 setback to Corry

The Warren baseball team had a perfect night for some Friday action as they hosted the Corry Beavers at Old Legion Field.

Unfortunately for the Dragons, they would fall just short in an emotional roller coaster of a game where the visiting Beavers came out victorious by a narrow 6-5 score.

Lately, the Dragons seem to have a knack for being the first to strike, and Friday was no different. Broc Bryan got the action started in the bottom of the first inning as he had a stand-up RBI double to knock in Brady Shene who was pinch-running for David Manning, who had walked. The very next batter, Eli Snyder, would drive in Bryan to put the home team up 2-0.

Three scoreless innings from both teams would occur before another run would be scored. This time it was the Beavers in the top of the fifth to erase the goose egg and notch their first run of the game.

The Dragons could not respond on the offensive end, but shut out the Beavers in the top of the sixth inning.

With Warren in control, Manning would take first base off a walk, then Bryan had a nice single in the gap to advance Manning and put him into scoring position. A heads-up base running play from Manning allowed him to steal third base to put the Dragons in prime position. Gabe Thibodeaux would score Manning off an RBI groundout to extend the lead 3-1 with the final inning left to play.

The top of the seventh inning saw the Beavers catch fire as they crossed the plate five times to take the 6-3 lead before the Dragons could amass three outs.

The home team wasn’t going to roll over as they gave it all they had in the bottom of the seventh inning. Colin Zdarko would be walked to kick off the comeback effort, followed by a Bradey Chase double to put himself and Zdarko into scoring position with no outs. Brady Shene hit a fielder’s choice grounder to shortstop that allowed Zdarko to score. With another display of smart base running, Chase advanced to third base. The Beavers tried to throw him out, but could not control the ball, which enabled the Dragons to score another run to put the game at 6-5. Down one run, Duncan McGarry singled, followed by another Bryan hit to put McGarry at third base. This is all the further Warren would get to mounting the comeback as a strikeout ended the game.

The Beavers avenged an early-season loss to the Dragons with the 6-5 victory.

Warren will next face the Harbor Creek Huskies Monday at 4 p.m. at Old Legion Field.

Starting at $3.50/week.
