WCSD board to discuss window safety improvements

The Warren County School District will touch on several topics including the approval of the proposed estimates with FastSigns for the window film safety project at Youngsville Elementary Middle School, as well as Sheffield Area Elementary middle school.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, April 20 at the Central Office building in Russell.

One of the items includes that the Office of Pupil Services is investigating a grant request to the Community Foundation of Warren County to assist in the purchase of new passenger vans to support students enrolled at the Warren County Career Center (WCCC) and the STRIVE Program.

The grant would be supported by a second application to the DeFrees Family Fund. A third grant opportunity is being explored to provide the remaining funds necessary to complete the purchase. The passenger vans will be used exclusively for educational purposes, including work-based learning, job shadowing, community-based instruction, and both district- and state-sponsored programs. This will increase student participation in these opportunities while improving transportation efficiency and reducing long-term operational costs. All grant applications mentioned are currently in early exploration or development.

The Board will also be directed to authorize the Director of Business Services, after June 30, to make budget transfers applicable to the 2025-26 fiscal year, as necessary, in preparation of the 2025-26 annual audit, with the understanding that all such transfers shall be presented to the Board for approval/ratification at a subsequent meeting.

In other items up for discussion include:

— The Warren County Career Center’s Comprehensive Plan, which is required every three years, uses multiple data sources to identify strengths and needs and establish action plans aligned to those needs.

— In athletics, School Board members have expressed support for the proposed legislation, House Bill 41, for interscholastic athletics which is in place to create an avenue for more equitable competition among all students and public-school districts within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, seeing it as a benefit to the students of WCSD. A request which will be sent to the PIAA, to work within current laws and regulations to expand classifications in interscholastic athletics, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to compete against like-sized schools in the spirit of fairness.

— The EMHS Marching Band is requesting the purchase of uniforms that will accommodate their growing marching band.

— A 10-page monthly report of positive happenings in the schools and showcases learning in action across the district.

Starting at $3.50/week.
