Eisenhower boys win consolation game
DUKE CENTER — The Eisenhower boys basketball team picked up its first win of the 2023 season over the weekend when it defeated Portville (N.Y.) 71-64 in the consolation game of the Randy Stebbins Tip-Off Tournament at Otto-Eldred High School.
Freshman Austin Hanson had a big game for the Knights as he finished with 24 points, highlighted by five 3-pointers.
Eisenhower jumped out to a 19-12 first-quarter lead despite Portville’s Aiden DeFazio’s four 3-pointers in the quarter.
Hanson poured in 13 second-quarter points as the Knights extended their lead to 43-32 at the half.
“I thought Austin had a very solid first half shooting the ball for us,” Eisenhower head coach Ryan Mangini said. “It certainly carried us on the offensive end.”
The third quarter saw Portville’s defense begin to force turnovers by the Knights, which led to fewer shot opportunities, cutting the Eisenhower lead to 56-49.
With both teams matching baskets, Portville was forced to foul and the Knights’ Kyler Black was 6 of 8 from the free-throw line. Casey Seymour went 5 of 6 from the line and Hanson was 2 for 2. The Knights went 14 of 18 from the line as a team in the fourth quarter to protect their lead and held on for the 71-64 win.
Defazio took high game scoring honors with 34 points. Hanson had 24 and Kyler Black added 17 for the Knights.
“I am happy with our poise in the fourth quarter when they made their run,” Mangini said. “I thought Casey Seymour had a nice game on both ends of the court. Kyler Black had a nice game and put two really nice games together back to back. I was happy to see him named to the all-tournament team. If we want to continue to improve and get ready for region play we have to work on cutting down our turnovers.”
