The Warren Unified track and field team traveled to General McLane on Tuesday for their first meet of the season, which was the first-ever contest in program history.

The Dragons performed well, but fell to Northwestern (177 points), Corry (115) and General McLane (106).

Warren had a great first outing with almost every athlete setting new personal bests.

The Dragons finished with a cumulative 98 points for the contest.

Finishing first in their respective events were: Hemi Barn, 400 meters and javelin; Julia Getner, 100 meters and long jump; Isaac Hammerbeck, 800 meters and javelin; Loralei Johnson, 800 meters and javelin; Wade Lewis, 400 meters; and Isaac Zapel, shot put.

Both 400-meter relay teams also had strong performances with successful handoffs. Team 1 was made up of Peyton Vincent, Ryder Check, Jacob Elmquist and Eliana Retterer. Team 2 was made up of Isaac Zapel, Colton Ristau, Peyton Horner and Sophia Fromknecht.

“Overall, we are very proud of our team with their performance yesterday,” said head coach Cayla Onoratti. “There were many nerves with it being the first track meet for many, but they all came out strong. This was our first Unified track meet experience, and it was incredible to see. I encourage WCSD school staff, students and the community to attend our home meet next Monday. We would like to thank the Warren Sports Boosters for waiving all admittance fees on Monday, encouraging everyone to come out and cheer us on. We are excited to have varsity track athletes and coaches help run the meet and cheer us on, too.”

The Dragons compete again today when they travel to Fairview at 2:15 p.m. Their first home meet is next Monday, slated for a 4:15 p.m. start time.

Starting at $3.50/week.
