Warren’s boys basketball team jumped out to a 22-14 first-quarter lead and continued to maintain its lead in a 70-61 non-region win over Fairview on Thursday at Warren Area High School.
Junior point guard Tommy Nyquist scored 11 of his team-high 18 points in the opening quarter and Warren hit three of its 10 3-pointers in the stanza.
“I thought we were aggressive off the dribble early,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 5-1 overall. “Tommy really got us going offensively, then Owen (Becker) and Braylon (Barnes) warmed up in the first half as well. I was pleased with our effort defensively and, at times, we created turnovers in our press. Konnor (Hoffman) and Jack (Darling) did a good job off the bench due to foul trouble.”
Barnes finished with 17 points and Becker 11 as the Dragons had four players score in double figures.
Parks Ordiway found his stroke in the second half, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring all 13 of his points.
“Parks also had all of his points in the second half, so it’s good to see him be able to get some shots to fall as well,” said Berdine. “Only 10 turnovers (as a team) tonight, so that normally gives us a good chance.”
The Dragons hadn’t played a game since a hard-fought win on Dec. 13 at Harbor Creek.
“Being off as long as what I thought we were, I was really pleased with the focus and energy we came out with, which we need when we play a good team like Fairview (2-4),” said Berdine.
Jeremy Frazao and Archie Murphey combined for 45 of Fairview’s 61 points in the loss.
The Dragons were 8-for-11 at the line in the fourth quarter.
Earlier on Thursday, Chase Sitler scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half of Warren’s 40-35 junior varsity win over Fairview. The Dragons were 5-of-6 at the line down the stretch when the Tigers were forced to foul.
