The Jamestown Area Old Timers swept a doubleheader from Warren (Ohio) Old Timers on Aug. 14 to improve to 8-5 on the season.
Pitching was the strong point in the 4-1 and 10-1 wins.
In the opener, Ed Baldensperger limited Warren to three hits, none after a leadoff single in the second. An error and a pair of singles in the first scored an unearned run. Baldensperger allowed two walks, going the distance, to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Mark Hovan’s single after Jon Sitler’s leadoff double gave the Old Timers an early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, with the game tied, Sitler led off with a single. A Pat Duffy sacrifice moved Sitler to second. Ron Thomas brought in Sitler with a single. In the fifth, Roy Luksch led off with a walk and eventually scored on Wade Nelson’s double.
Baldensperger coaxed a leadoff walk in the seventh. A Luksch sacrifice and a single by Duffy scored Baldensperger, closing out the scoring.
Sitler finished the game with three hits.
In the nightcap, Ron Thomas pitched a complete game, allowing one run, while walking one and striking out three.
Jamestown broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning, scoring three unearned runs. In the sixth, the Old Timers tallied five more runs on four walks, two errors, and a pair of hits. Hovan struck the major blow with a double.
Rick Prindle, Nelson (who had three runs batted in), and Brian Ferry each had two hits to lead a 12-hit attack.
