Warren 2nd at region mega match

GIRARD — Warren’s golf team had its best finish of the season on Tuesday, placing second in the seven-team Region 6 Mega Match held at Elk Valley Golf Course.

Cathedral Prep remains in first place in the region after finishing first in its fourth mega match this season, with a team score of 313.

Warren’s top four finished in second place with a 332.

Prep’s Breckin Taylor shot an 18-hole 72 at McDowell’s home meet. Warren’s Owen Blum and Braddock Damore were third and fourth with 75 and 76, respectively. Owen Becker shot an 85 for Warren, and Connor Zaffino a 96. Bryce Blair added a 102.

“I’m really proud of the way the team played today,” said Warren coach Dan Passmore. “In a region match, we count four scores from five players. We only have three returning players from last year, so they know their score will probably get counted in the team score. Owen Blum and Braddock Damore both shot season lows. Owen Becker didn’t play his best, but kept his head and carded a good score. Then, we need either Bryce Blair (first-year senior) or Conner Zaffino (freshman) to shoot our fourth score on a course they are seeing for the first time. Every match is giving them valuable experience. A team score between 320-to-330 is always our goal and we are getting close.”

McDowell was third at 333, Meadville and Erie shot team scores of 346 each, Harbor Creek 369, and General McLane 375.
