DeSimone’s late heroics lift Eagles to win

KANE — Matt DeSimone’s two-out RBI single in the seventh inning scored Ethan Beers and lifted Youngsville to its 10th win of the season, 3-2, over Kane on Monday.

“It was a well-played high school baseball game by both sides,” said Youngsville coach Eddie Dorunda. “We couldn’t be as aggressive on the bases as we normally are facing a lefty on the mound.”

The game began as a defensive and pitching stalemate as starting pitchers Wyatt Dalrymple for Youngsville and Phinn Chamberlain for Kane breezed through the opening two innings.

Youngsville (10-2, 8-2 Region 3) was the first to crack the scoreboard when DeSimone led off with a double and was able to move to third on a groundout from Talon Mesel. Moments later, James Johnson singled to score DeSimone and make it 1-0.

Dalrymple continued cruising on the mound, facing the minimum number of Kane batters through three innings and he was able to help his own cause in the top of the fourth.

Nathan Lucks led off the inning with a double and David Manning’s sacrifice bunt moved him to third before Dalrymple drove him home with a sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to 2-0.

Kane was able to pull even in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of some shaky Eagles’ defense and a few timely hits. The first two batters of the frame reached base on errors and both eventually scored on RBI singles from Kane Sharba and Kyle Zook.

The Youngsville offense was unable to produce any threat in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Eagles also kept Kane off the board. Lucks relieved Dalrymple with two outs in the fifth and the game remained tied at 2-2, heading into the top of the seventh.

There, the Eagles delivered a little two-out lightning.

With two out and nobody on, Ethan Beers pinch hit for Lane Buccardo and reached on a walk. Cole Johnson followed with a single from the nine spot to set up DeSimone’s late dramatics.

“Ethan (Beers) came up big for us there in the top of the seventh, pinch hitting and drawing a leadoff walk,” said Dorunda. “With his speed and two outs, we took a chance and stole the next pitch to get him into scoring position and he eventually scored on DeSimone’s infield single.”

Lucks sat the Wolves down in order in the bottom of the seventh and the Eagles returned home with a hard-fought non-region win.

DeSimone, James Johnson and Cole Johnson all had two hits for the winners. Lucks got the win, pitching two and one-third perfect innings with four strikeouts. Dalrymple had a strong start as well, going four and two-thirds and allowing just two hits and two unearned runs while striking out four.

“I thought Wyatt pitched great,” added Dorunda. “He threw strikes and just kept them off-balance. He started to get a little tired and was getting close to his third time through the lineup so we thought bringing Nate in would be a good change of speed.”

The Eagles jump back into region play on Wednesday and Thursday with a pair of road games at Union City and Cochranton.
