Our opinion: Excitement for a new festival

It didn’t take long for Sheffield residents to create something new to replace the Johnny Appleseed Festival.

It was announced recently that the Sheffield Punkin’ Fest will take place from Oct. 11-13 at Sheffield Memorial Park. There will be lit pumpkins on display throughout the festival’s evening hours, contests, craft and food vendors.

Details are still being finalized, and those interested can visit www.facebook.com/events/995441945478508. Organizers have a lot of work ahead of them in the coming days, weeks and months, so keep checking the event page for updates.

What’s more important than details is that there is something to take the Johnny Appleseed Festival’s place. Everyone in the region should hope this new endeavor is successful and that the Punkin’ Festival becomes a permanent annual attraction that benefits both Sheffield and its neighbors.

Old traditions will eventually change. What’s important is how we handle the loss of the familiar things that we’ve grown accustomed to. In Sheffield, that means coming up with something new to draw people to Sheffield. We can’t wait to see what this new festival looks like.
