Warren County to host U.S. Canoe Association national races in August

Warren County is set to host the U.S. Canoe Association national races this summer for the eighth time since 2003.

The multi-day event is set to return to Warren and run Aug. 11-15.

John Papalia, director of chamber operations and tourism for the Warren County Chamber of Business & Industry, said word came of the decision on Wednesday, adding that the USCA reached out to him about the prospect of holding the races here this summer.

The challenge was then to turn around a proposal for the delegates of the USCA to vote on.

That proposal has a lot of moving parts, including partnering agencies and the need for water rescue teams, and, overall, to “make sure it can be administered safely for volunteers and participants.”

“We feel that being able to pull it together on short notice and bring the paddlers to our community would be a good thing for the area,” Papalia said.

According to the USCA, the August 2021 event had been set for Lock Haven.

Since 1968, Wabash, Jersey Shore, and Marinette, Wisconsin., are the only venues other than Warren to host the event three times. Of those, Jersey Shore’s were in the shortest span — 1987 to 1998.

This year will mark the seventh time that the races will be in Warren County. They were held here every other year between 2003 and 2009 and then again in 2012, 2015 and 2019.

Starting at $3.50/week.
