Dragons edge Conneaut, run record to 14-2

Katie Madigan scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on a line-drive triple and throwing error, and Kelsey Stuart finished off another gem, in a 3-2 Region 5 win over Conneaut on Wednesday.

“Good pitching and great defense won us another game,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart, whose Dragons are 14-2 overall and 11-2 in the region. “Carly (Beers, at first base) had a good day on the field. I’m also proud of Miken Beers for stepping in to pinch hit with two outs and found herself standing on first base.”

Conneaut, fresh off defeating Villa Maria on Tuesday for Villa’s second region loss, is 10-6 overall and 7-5 in the region.

Carly Beers started things off with a two-out RBI double in the second, and she scored on Halle Kuzminski’s RBI single.

Stuart was cruising in the pitching circle, retiring the first 10 batters before a one-out base hit in the fourth. Linda Shepard tied the game on one swing and it stayed 2-2 until the sixth.

“Katie ripped it down the left-field line and it went off the left fielder’s glove on a bounce,” said coach Stuart. “(Katie) made it to third, then the incoming throw to third went off the third baseman’s glove and rolled toward the mound — where nobody was at — and she scooted home.”

Kelsey Stuart allowed just one more hit after the home run, and that was leading off the seventh. A fielder’s choice and two fly outs later and Warren won its seventh straight.

Stuart struck out eight in the three-hitter. She also reached twice offensively in the pitchers’ duel.

The Dragons will now travel to Conneaut today fresh off their win over the Eagles.

“It’s no easy task to play eight games in 10 days and only lose one,” said coach Stuart. “These girls are battling through games and the heat and coming out on top. One more to go. I’m so proud of them.”

Kuzminski and Lily Devore reached twice each in a 3-0 junior varsity win, later Wednesday. Rylie Yeager pitched four scoreless innings in the win.

Starting at $3.50/week.
