Times Observer Male Athlete of the Year: Aidan Morrison

Warren's Aidan Morrison was named the 2017-18 Times Observer Male Athlete of the Year.

The Times Observer sports staff launched its initial All-Star teams for each of the fall, winter and spring seasons this year. In addition, we have also selected the first Times Observer ‘Male and Female Athletes of the Year’, which includes other finalists as well, and also the ‘All-Freshmen’ teams. This was an exciting new addition, one that we hope you enjoy. This is something we plan on not only continuing but building upon in the coming year.

Congratulations to all of the great student-athletes in Warren County this school year who excelled both in the classroom, the community and the athletic arena.

Male Athlete of the Year

Aidan Morrison (Warren Football-Basketball-Baseball, Junior)

There were a number of deserving candidates for the inaugural Times Observer Male Athlete of the Year, but Morrison stood out for his ability to excel in three different sports.

Cale Albaugh

Baseball is Morrison’s first love, and he helped lead the Dragons to another successful season, one that ended with a loss to eventual state semifinalist Meadville. He was named Region 6 Defensive MVP for his work behind the plate, and it’s a big reason why he has a number of college coaches looking his way. Offensively, he slashed .358/.400/.492 with a pair of home runs and 14 RBI. He is currently playing this summer for the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox, a top travel league team based out of Frederick, Md, along with Dragon teammate Austyn Cummings.

In football, Morrison was a two-way starter at tight end and outside linebacker. On defense, he registered 54 tackles, seven of which went for loss, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He was used primarily as a blocker on offense, but did register a touchdown catch.

In basketball, he was a starting forward, often drawing tough defensive assignments against much taller opponents. That didn’t stop him from leading the team in rebounding, while averaging 7.3 points per game for a team that lost to a talented George Junior Republic squad in the District 10 playoffs. He also led the team in steals, averaging 1.5 per contest.

Morrison will go into his senior season primed for success, as a major cog for all three Dragon teams he is a part of.

Spencer Head

Other Finalists

Caleb Ei (Warren Soccer-Basketball-Tennis, Junior)

Morrison’s basketball teammate and also a junior, Ei was a 3-sport standout in his own right. He earned first team all-region honors in both basketball and tennis, and was a key cog on defense for the Warren soccer team. In soccer, he registered 374 steals, second on the team, for a Warren squad that gave the top ranked team in the state, Cathedral Prep, all they could handle in a 4-2 contest in the District 10 playoffs.

In basketball, Ei was the leading scorer for a balanced Warren team, averaging 13.8 ppg. and was second on the team in rebounds and second in steals. He also shot an impressive 59 percent from the floor for a Dragons team that returns all five starters this coming season.

In tennis he was impressive as wel, teaming with Zach Fincher to form the top Region 2 doubles team for the region champs.

Caleb Ei

He will enter 2018 as a key member in all three sports.

Spencer Head (Eisenhower Football-Wrestling-Track and Field, Senior)

A theme here, Head was another three sport standout, leading the Knights on the field, on the mat and on the track.

Wrestling was his best sport, as, after years of hard work, he earned a trip to states as a senior and also surpassed the 100 career wins mark. He also helped lead the Knight to a berth in the District 10 team duals, where they finished fourth, just missing qualifying for states. Head’s trip to Hershey ended one win shy of a state medal, but he nevertheless graduates as one of the most decorated wrestlers in program history.

In football, Head was a starting quarterback and defensive back for the Knights, earning second team all-region honors on defense. Offensively, he rushed for 332 yards and six touchdowns, while throwing for 367 yards and two scores. On defense, he finished with 50 tackles, four of which went for loss, as well as an interception and a sack. In track, he was part of a 1600 relay team that earned second team Region 4 honors, qualifying for districts in the process.

Cale Albaugh (Sheffield Football-Basketball-Track and Field, Senior)

You guessed it, another 3-sport standout. Albaugh was an AML all-star in football, the leading scorer on the basketball team and a District 9 qualifier in track and field.

He was a 2-way starter for three years at quarterback and defensive back for the Wolverines, and was selected for the Varischetti All-Star game, pitting the AML vs. the KSAC, which takes place tonight, as well as the Big 30 game, pitting Pennsylvania against New York, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Parkway Field in Bradford.

In basketball, Albaugh led the Wolverines in scoring at 12.7 ppg. He was their top 3-point shooter, saving his best games for some of the Wolverines’ biggest opponents, including a career-high 34 against county rival Eisenhower.

In track and field, he was a 2-time District 9 qualifier as part of the 400 meter relay team, as well as the javelin. He medaled in the javelin at the D-9 championships with a throw of 137-0, which earned him a tie for sixth place.

He graduates from Sheffield as a decorated athlete in multiple sports for four years.
