Is our country promoting division? Dear Editor, Yes, black lives do matter. History is eloquent with slavery and lynching. The precious lives of innocent school children matter. The lives of Hispanics who are detained and murdered matter. The lives of white people who are killed matter. The war veterans who suffer and live on the streets matter. The lives of adults and children who live in poverty matter. Need I continue? Yet, after each and every atrocity the out cry is deafening until you don’t hear it, much like the passing of a thunder storm. Suddenly, all is once again ...

‘Truth shall make you free’

Dear Editor, The inscription on the Liberty Bell says “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” This is a direct quotation from the book of Leviticus in the Bible. Another place in the Bible that shows the virtues of liberty is 2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” The founding fathers of our country realized the importance of liberty. Our Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed ...

Truth does not always come from government Dear Editor: We have heard it before, during the Vietnam War, the distortions, the outright lies, and misinformation from our politicians and generals about winning the war, number counts and inundating the American people with skewed statistics: Johnson, McNamara, Westmoreland, Nixon, et. al. American Vietnam War fatalities officially numbered 50,000 plus. Many returning GIs later succumbed to the ill effects of Agent Orange; others suffered PTSD and some committed suicide. Even so, the five-month death count of COVID-19 has exceeded the ...

Children must use caution in park

Dear Editor, It was good to see the kids enjoying the Beaty playground, which opened up last week. I pray they will be safe as they have fun this summer. However, I did see something that disturbed me. A girl about 9 or 10 was walking inside the overflow fence of the Conewango Creek on the cement. I told her to be careful because it was dangerous. This is not the first time I have seen children trying to be brave. The fence is there for a purpose. Please parents, make sure your precious children never go inside that fence. Thank you and let's have a most wonderful, safe ...

We can open up quicker

Dear Editor, In regards to "Going green" (May 23), I think it is terrible that all of these businesses were closed in the first place. They would know how to control distancing so they should have been able to stay open. I think it is time that all of the businesses in our town open up. It is not like the stores have big long lines of people. Distancing would be easy to do for them. This would also apply to hair salons and barber shops. This would be easy to control there. In restaurants and bars, control can be done by designating only certain tables. In bars, they can ...

Getting our attention?

Dear Editor, I am not a pastor, priest, lay person, etc. I am just a person who knows we are in trouble—I’m a sinner saved by grace. I know who is in charge and has the answer. That is God Almighty; Jesus, His Son; and Holy Spirit, the Comforter. In the bible there was Pharaoh who held the Israelites in slavery. Long story short, he wouldn’t let them go. Plague after plague: frogs, locust, loss of children, sores, etc. Eventually, the slaves were led to freedom—God was bigger than Pharaoh! Then there was Noah and the flood. The world was filled with evil and God destroyed ...
