Dear Editor, Americans today are sharply divided. This division rests not so much on our differing political views or even on the moral directives these views rest on but on our individual interpretations of the moral directives we accept and follow. Overall, we are in an epic tug-of-war in which each side is dug in, anchored on the left by Biden, anchored on the right by Trump; on the left, fear of the end of democracy and the rise of demagogism, on the right, fear of the end of democracy and the rise of socialism. Covering all bases

Dear Editor, Regarding the letter in Tuesday’s paper (Oct. 13), the writer claimed that only 25 percent or less of the shoppers in major stores were wearing masks. I was in Walmart that afternoon and only saw five people without masks — two young men in their 20s, two men in their 40s and one elderly lady. I estimate there were 75 or more people in the grocery section and checkout. I wonder what Walmart the writer was visiting. Dick Schuler, Warren

Dear Editor, I wrote before about not voting. This is a very different election over the usual cases. You have two candidates that most people do not want to see get the presidency. Yet we are told that we should vote. To me, that sounds hypocritical. That is like putting two rotten apples in front of you and telling you that you must eat one of them. Putting our country first

Dear Editor, In the name of the Divine Providence under whose protection our founding fathers relied upon when writing the declaration of independence in 1776, and, for our own sake in this crisis we find ourselves, let us turn back from our present political course. Let us hold up a new social banner, “God, save our country.” Let us seek out our neighbor, Republican and Democrat, extend our hand and say, “Let us smother our hate, put aside our differences and work together on common ground to save out wounded country. Stamp of disapproval

Dear Editor, I took my mail-in ballot to the post office one morning and requested it be “kept local” as I have done many times before, including the spring primary. The reason I do this is because I have had first class mail take two months to make the round trip to Pittsburgh! On this day, I was told that this can no longer be done. Interesting timing. So I walked to the courthouse believing there would be a secure ballot box inside the entrance. I was told there was not one because of potential voter fraud. I think I’m starting to see a pattern.
