Dear Editor, Socialism was accepted in the United States with the election of FDR in the late 1930s because of people dying alone and abandoned due to the Great Depression. Since then we have added several socialist programs that provide protection for our elderly, mentally and physically handicapped and our combat veterans. Many Republicans have resisted these programs because we are supposed to be a Capitalist Nation and they believe that socialism is both evil and a slippery slide to destruction. Dear Editor, Our Declaration of Independence states our Creator endowed us with unalienable rights, including “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” With the Supreme Court’s 1973 decisions of Roe versus Wade and Doe versus Bolton, abortion became a significant cause for the loss of American lives, which the Guttmacher Institute reports is now greater than 60 million. Dear Editor, Recently Democrats have tried to peel off the pro-life vote from the Republican party. An often used argument is the idea that abortion can’t be abolished until all children have a financially stable and ideal home life. Following that logic, slavery should not have been abolished until all slaves could read, write, have shelter, and a job.
