Tidioute man faces assault charges after incident outside bar

A Tidioute man faces charges stemming from an assault outside a bar in Tidioute that allegedly left the victim with a broken orbital bone and chipped teeth.

Pennsylvania state troopers were assigned to investigate an alleged assault in front of the Tidioute Hotel, according to the affidavit of probable cause. The incident, troopers say, occurred Saturday night between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Samuel J. Nicholson, 39, 55 Jefferson St., was charged in the wake of the investigation.

“The hotel was locked and nobody came to the door,” the affidavit states. “We located blood in front of the hotel. It was on the sidewalk and on the side of the street.”

Troopers say they attempted to interview four people at a different establishment and “all said that they did not know what I was talking about” and “did not wish to give me any information.”

An interview with the victim was conducted on April 23 shortly after 1 a.m. at Titusville Hospital, where the victim was taken for treatment of injuries that troopers say included a fractured orbital bone, chipped teeth and a small laceration on the back of the head.

The victim allegedly told troopers that he and a friend were going from one establishment to the Hotel and “when he entered the Hotel, Nicholson grabbed him and began pushing him outside. Once outside, Nicholson punched (the victim)” who said that he “fell backwards after the punch and hit his head on the concrete.”

The victim then alleged that Nicholson “threw him onto a bench and told him that he better not tell the police because he would kill him if he did.”

Troopers say that the victim said Nicholson “had an issue with him because of something that happened to his daughter years and years ago” and that Nicholson “made mention of it before assaulting him,” per the affidavit.

State Police said in a statement that an arrest warrant was obtained for Nicholson who subsequently turned himself into the Starbrick barracks.

Online court records show that Nicholson has been charged with aggravated assault, a first-degree felony, as well as simple assault, terroristic threats and harassment.

He was released on $25,000 unsecured bond after a preliminary arraignment held Monday morning before District Judge Todd Woodin. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for next week.

Starting at $3.50/week.
