Warren Area High School junior Max Spiegel just missed the podium Saturday at the PIAA State Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.

Spiegel’s signature event, the high jump, had a slight change of events due to Mother Nature not cooperating. The event had to be moved indoors, which meant all athletes had to compete in sneakers. After clearing 6 feet and 4 inches, Max missed all of his attempts at 6-6, finishing in a very respectable 10th place in the state of Pennsylvania.

Darius Reid, of Upper Perkiomen, won the AAA crown with a leap of 6-8. Spiegel will have his senior season set on a PIAA medal, as well as the WAHS high jump record of 6-9 by 1991 state champion Seth Meyers.

“We had a great season as a whole,” Warren head coach Kevin Dustin said about the season. “Both squads had winning records, and the team showed good progress throughout the season. We had a great group competing at districts and brought home a ton of medals. Max, of course, had a great day at districts and earned his way to states in the high jump. He had to adjust quickly on the day he had to jump as they moved the event indoors due to rain and it was not on a track-like surface anymore. He made his adjustments and jumped great. He finishes the season as a top-10 high jumper in the state of PA. That’s a pretty awesome accomplishment, and he’s excited to keep improving into next year. I am very proud of everyone on the team this year and wish them all the best next season.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
