Otto hands Sheffield first loss
DUKE CENTER — Sheffield’s football team started out on Friday where it left off last week, opening the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown pass on its second possession from Colby Barr to Darrell Barno at Otto-Eldridge/Oswayo Valley.
Both teams entered at 1-0, but the season-opening victories weren’t created equally as Sheffield’s win over Bucktail was its first in five seasons. Otto, on the other hand, had defeated Sheffield 11 straight times dating back to 2013, and dropped 50 points on Coudersport to start 1-0 this season.
OEOV answered Sheffield’s opening score on Friday with 30 points in the second quarter and 38 in the first half en route to a 44-6 win.
Sheffield coach Mike Barr said this game is already adding motivation for the remainder of the season.
“We came out and executed like we wanted to,” said Sheffield coach Mike Barr. “The kids played a great game. They just had one more athlete than we did. The kids felt this loss and I feel it’s going to motivate them even more for this upcoming week. (I am) not going to comment too much, but I have never seen kids treated the way they were by the officials. It was sad to see. I felt bad for our kids.”
Sheffield’s 6-0 lead turned into a 38-6 deficit by halftime.
For Otto, quarterback Shane Magee was 11 of 24 through the air for 190 yards and three touchdowns, two of those going to Manning Splain, who had over 100 yards receiving. Otto (2-0) also had a 100-yard rusher in Hunter App.
After the touchdown, Barr completed just two more passes for Sheffield (1-1).
Otto’s first score came after a Barr interception. The Terrors scored another first-half touchdown after a fumble recovery on a squib kick.
Tayvion Herring had 54 yards rushing for Sheffield and Barno had two grabs for 43 yards receiving.
