3rd quarter dooms Dragons
EDINBORO — General McLane’s 21-7 third quarter put Warren’s girls basketball team in a hole it couldn’t get out of in a 52-32 nonregion win over the Dragons on Thursday at General McLane High School.
“Physicality was definitely a factor tonight,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons are 2-1 after their first loss. “GM did a nice job clogging up the paint, making it hard to drive to the hoop, and they are just a physical team. We kept up, going back and forth with the lead in the first half, but came out flat in the third and had a tough time rallying back.”
After two wins over the weekend, Alana Stuart scored 7 points in Warren’s 14-9 first quarter.
General McLane took a 25-23 halftime lead with a balanced scoring effort and didn’t look back. Kiley Leasure had 8 points and Sam Dore 7 in McLane’s 21-7 third quarter.
Leasure led GM (4-1) with 18 points and Stuart finished with 10 for Warren.
“There are some things we need to work on, especially when our drives are limited and we aren’t necessarily hitting a lot of shots,” said Phillips. “At the end of the day, it’s early in the season and we take each day, and certainly each game, and learn what we need to do better. I really try to press and emphasize the little things, talking on ‘D,’ boxing out and rebounding, taking care of the ball; we do the little things right, we become that much better.”
Earlier Thursday, Tori Solberg finished with 9 points and Abby Roell 7 in Warren’s 40-23 junior varsity loss.
