It’s been over a month since Sheffield won its opener at home against Bucktail, snapping a losing streak dating back to 2019.
The Wolverines haven’t forgotten the feeling, but if they needed a reminder, today’s homecoming game — in the midst of talk to close the high school — does the trick.
“Homecoming week there is always extra energy,” said Sheffield coach Mike Barr, whose 1-2 Wolverines will take on 4-1 Otto-Eldred/Oswayo Valley at 1:30 p.m. at Wolverine Mountain following a week of activities.
“We have had a great week at practice and the kids are excited for the game,” said Barr. “Playing them once before, I believe, does help. They know what they have in front of them. They are ready.”
After a 38-6 home win over Bucktail on Aug. 24, Sheffield has had three straight road games, including a 44-6 loss to the same OEOV in Week 2. OEOV quarterback Shane Magee threw three touchdown passes — two to Manning Splain, who ended with 111 receiving yards. In its balanced attack, Hunter App also had 110 rushing yards and a score in Otto’s 12th straight win over Sheffield.
“(We) will give it 100 percent and we will let the chips fall where they will,” said Barr. “We do feel like we will get another win this year, possibly more than one more.”
