Scholar nets all four goals in Eisenhower’s 4-2 soccer victory over Maplewood
GUYS MILLS — The Eisenhower girls soccer team traveled to Maplewood on Wednesday for its third game in as many days, but if the Knights were tired it didn’t show as they downed the Lady Tigers 4-2 for their third win of the week.
Leading the way was Lexi Scholar, who scored all four goals.
Scholar’s four goals gave her a fifth hat trick on the season.
Scholar started the Knights’ scoring when she took a pass from Callan Gigliotti at the 28-minute mark and sent it sailing into net to give Eisenhower a 1-0 lead.
The field at Maplewood was horribly overgrown, perhaps in an attempt to slow Scholar down, but it didn’t work as she connected on two more first-half goals in a span of three minutes to give her team a 3-0 halftime lead.
Ella Marty connected on the Lady Tigers’ first goal at the 29-minute mark of the second half and teammate Regan Cox would add another goal for Maplewood to make the score 3-2 with 21 minutes remaining in the game.
Eisenhower’s defense rose up and stopped multiple attacks and its offense played keepaway with crisp passing to not allow the Lady Tigers another goal.
Scholar tallied her fourth and final goal — she has at least a hat trick in five games — with 6:31 remaining to give Eisenhower some breathing room.
“We came out super strong to start the game,” Eisenhower head coach Faith Johnson said. “Our passes were crisp and Lexi had some open shots to get us an early lead. We started to relax at the start of the second half and Maplewood simply wanted it more. Our girls were finally able to get it together and close out the game strong and get the win.
“The girls were tired, but I’m proud of how they played. I’m grateful for the win and will enjoy a couple of days off before our next game.”
The Lady Knights improved their record to 3-2 in the region and 7-2-1 overall. They are back in action at home Saturday when they play Redbank Valley at 11 a.m.
