Junior High Division kicks off locally

Razzlin Pratz

The Warren Youth Climbing League launched a new division this spring. These older, more experienced, climbers bring a level of ability and athleticism that is exciting to watch. The season is in full swing.

The season-opening doubleheader saw the Allegheny Outfitters Sasquatches vs. the Bent Run Hellbenders and the Kinzua Vet Clinic Bulls vs. the Whirley Tornadoes.

The first match opened with Owen Ash putting up an impressive 41.3 3-Boulder Average. However, Allegheny Outfitters’ Eloise Harrington and Elodie Criswell (both with 43 3BAs) led the Sasquatches to victory as they bested the Hellbenders 642-564. The second match saw a strong Kinzua Vet Clinic team led by Coleman Miller (39.7 3BA) and Marshall Harrington (36.3 3BA) face off against a very solid Whirley team. Tornado Nina Harrington’s 43 3BA was the standout performance, however all of the Whirley climbers had at least a 33 3BA. This consistency was the difference as the Tornadoes bested the Bulls 654-586.

Last Monday saw another doubleheader with Constables Construction facing off against Kinzua Vet Clinic and Whirley vs. Cable Excavating. These contests featured some of the highest scoring the league has ever seen.

During the first match, Kinzua Vet Clinic’s Coleman Miller made quick work of the competition “set” topping all of the hardest boulders. His rampage culminated with a lache move where he literally swung through the air — spanning a gap between two climbing walls — and landing nimbly on a small ledge. Miller posted an impressive 44.3 3BA. However, the Constables Construction Tigers were not intimidated. Rather, they seemed inspired and later, in the final period, Razzlin Pratz was able to match Miller’s top of boulder 14. And with his earlier “flashes” (completions on the first try) of boulders 12 and 13, Pratz posted an impressive 46.3 3BA. His teammate, Riley Littlefield also scored big with a 41.3 3BA, and the Tigers pulled past the Bulls 609-589.

The final contest featured the Whirley Tornadoes and the Cable Excavating Bulldogs. Both Whirley’s Nina Harrington and Cable Excavating’s Grant Criswell were able to match the feat of topping all three hardest climbs, earning a 46.3 3BA. Nevertheless, it appeared that this contest would not be determined by one stellar performance, rather a team effort. And Whirley did it again; all of their climbers earning a minimum 33 3BA; and the Tornadoes bested the Bulldogs 674-591.

Starting at $3.50/week.
