Our opinion: Local foundation fills a niche
The White Cane Foundation’s partnership with Global Vision 2020 won’t help everyone with vision issues in Warren County.
But we are certain that the new program will fill a niche in our community – and commend the foundation’s board for their work doing so.
Global Vision 2020 is training local members and volunteers of the White Cane Foundation to provide basic vision screenings and low-cost custom reading glasses within the community. Recently area residents had the opportunity to receive a basic vision screening and, if appropriate, be fitted for custom reading glasses on-site for $20. There are no financial eligibility requirements, and all community members are welcome.
It’s important to note that screenings are not clinical screenings, nor are the volunteers suddenly taking the place of licensed optometrists. No prescriptions are being handed out. Participants are encouraged to consult a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist for comprehensive eye exams, diagnosis, or treatment of any vision or eye health concerns.
But for those who need a little help seeing a bit more clearly, the White Cane Foundation’s new partnership can be helpful to those who can’t always afford to see an optometrist and for whom non-prescription reading glasses can serve as a major quality of life improvement.
“Clear vision should never be out of reach,” organizers said in a news release. “Many families are making difficult financial choices every day, and something as simple as reading glasses often gets delayed. This program is about removing that barrier-not just for one evening, but for the long term.”
Kudos to the White Cane Foundation for finding a way to make a difference in the local community.
