In a surprise ceremony, the Karate Masters of Johnson’s Black Belt Academy, presented Master Johnson with a commemorative sword in honor and recognition of his promotion to 10th Dan, in the Art of Shotokan Karate. The sword holds special symbolism; the Saya (scabbard) is red, reflecting Master Johnson’s belt and rank and representing valor, honor and courage; the blade is Damascus steel, reflecting the strength of his character, (body, mind and spirit) and the tempering of his martial arts skills through his years of training. In addition, he was presented with a complimentary sword stand, with engraved plaque, memorializing the event. Pictured with Master Johnson, from left to right, are Kyoshi Bob Bruyer, 8th Dan; Adam Yurchisin, Sankyu; Renshi Erik Krantz, 4th Dan; Kyoshi Don Nelson, 8th Dan; Renshi Bruce Tuller, 4th Dan; Kyoshi Craig Ames, 8th Dan; Master Johnson, 10th Dan; Kyoshi Roger Shattuck, 8th Dan; Kyoshi Yoshiko Wood, 8th Dan; Kyoshi Randy Dickey, 8th Dan; Kyoshi Mark Williams, 8th Dan; and Renshi Jason Loree, 4th Dan.
