Ike softball wins, baseball falters in Smethport

SMETHPORT — The Eisenhower baseball and softball teams traveled to Smethport on Friday and earned a split. The boys lost to the Hubbers 12-4, in a game that was tied 4-4 in the fifth inning, and the Lady Knights exploded for 16 runs, winning 16-1.

Kendra Danielson had three hits, all singles, in four at bats to lead Eisenhower to a 16-1 win over Smethport.

The Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one inning and would score in each of the five innings.

Eisenhower jumped out to its lead in the top of the first on an Abbie Darr double that scored two runs. Alexis Pascuzzi drove in a run, Caitlyn Pikna singled, driving in a pair of runs and Morgan Zaffino.

Darr started in the circle for Eisenhower and surrendered two hits and one run, striking out three and walking one. Sammie Childs came on in relief for Darr and didn’t give up a hit, run or walk. She struck out five.

“We played well today,” head coach Neal Kent. “We got out to an early lead and our defense kept them in check. It was a really nice win. We have three big games next week, including senior night Wednesday against Kane.”

Danielson, Zaffino and Pikna combined for five of the team’s 10 hits, and scored five runs and drove in three between them.

Michael Palmieri got the start for the Knights and went two clean innings before the Hubbers scored a pair of runs in the third inning and added another in the fourth. Eisenhower took a 4-3 lead on a two-run home run by Wes Wilcox, and a Palmieri two-run single in the top of the fifth inning.

Smethport sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning and erupted for 12 runs to take a 12-4 lead, which stood for the final score.

Palmieri had three strikeouts and four walks, gave up four earned runs and scattered eight hits.

The Knights are back in action on Monday when they welcome Union City to Werner Park.
