Another record in the books
Harrison sets Warren swimming’s best mark in 500 freestyle
ERIE — Hugh Harrison isn’t just breaking a school record or two; it’s like he’s methodically taking them down one by one.
On Monday, the Warren Area High School junior and former District 10 champion broke the 500-yard free mark previously held since 2005 by Adrian Shodi.
Harrison — again swimming all by himself in a meet at Erie High School — broke Shodi’s mark of 5:03.20 by finishing in 4:58.29. This comes four days after Harrison broke yard records in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke in an away meet against Mercyhurst Prep — swimming alone in the pool then, as well.
“Only one school record for Hugh,” Beyer said about Warren’s sweep of the Royals on Monday.
Harrison also combined with teammates Brody Alexander, Jarod Peterson and Drake Niemitz to win the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay in a 66-10 boys win. Harrison teamed with Peterson, Niemitz and Jacob Retterer to win the 200 free relay.
Individually, Retterer won the 200 free and 100 backstroke, Alexander the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Niemitz the 50 freestyle and Peterson the 100 butterfly.
“Jake Retterer had a very good meet,” said Beyer. “Posted near-best time in the 100 back. He also added a new event to his high school competition, the 200 freestyle. With more work, he could obtain a district time.”
“A bunch of personal bests,” said Beyer, whose Lady Dragons completed the sweep with a 140-19 victory over Erie. “I think they are all at a favorable position. They keep improving or getting close-to-best times. We have to just keep working hard and going through the process.”
For the Lady Dragons, Summer Lucks won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Lucy Harrison the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Leyna Irwin the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, Samantha Caudill the 500 freestyle and Kirsten Johnson the 100 backstroke. Johnson, Harrison, Lucks and Irwin finished first in the 200 medley relay; Madeline Walker, Sarah Harvey, Alicia Collins and Lexi Paris won the 200 freestyle relay; and Katie Krogler, Lucks, Irwin and Harrison won the 400 freestyle relay.
Beyer said personal-best times came from “Leyna Irwin in the 50 and 100 freestyle; Lucy Harrison in the 100 breaststroke; Sam Caudill and Brody Alexander in the 200 IM; Sarah Harvey in the 50 free; and Violet Spiegel in the 100 breaststroke.”
