Warren plays ‘physically tough’ in region win over Erie
Warren’s girls basketball team, once again, used tough defense in a Region 6 win, 52-22 over Erie High on Saturday at Warren Area High School.
“It was a physically tough game,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan, whose Dragons are 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the region. Erie is 5-4 and 1-3, respectively.
Warren led 20-12 by halftime, but it was a 15-2 third quarter that put the game away. Sammie Ruhlman had 5 points, Riley Childress 4, and Gracie Ruhlman and Emma Ruhlman 3 apiece in the decisive third.
“This stretch of games we are in is by far the toughest ever as a coach,” said LaVan of the Dragons’ four games in the seven days against Erie schools McDowell, Villa Maria, Erie and Harbor Creek on Monday at home.
“This game was a lot closer than it shows,” said LaVan.
Emma Ruhlman finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and four assists; Childress 12 points and four assists; Gracie Ruhlman 8 points and seven boards, Sammie Ruhlman 7 points, and Alana Stuart 5 points.
“The last three games Gracie has really stepped up to fulfill her role,” said LaVan. “She is defending very well and also rebounding the ball.”
Warren held Erie High to single digits each quarter and 3 second-half field goals.
“They do very well on ‘D.’ They take great pride in it,” said LaVan of the Dragons.
