Strong first quarter helps Dragons knock off Corry
Times Observer Photo by Jon Sitler Warren running back Ethan Senz (14) turns the corner en route to one of his two touchdowns in the Dragons’ 32-14 win over Corry on Friday at War Memorial Field.
The Warren Dragons cruised out to a 12-0 first-quarter lead and coasted to a 32-14 win over Corry on Friday at War Memorial Field.
Warren head coach Mark Morelli said that’s not going to cut it on Nov. 6 when the Dragons (5-4) play General McLane in the District 10 4A playoffs.
“We did what we needed to do to win, but at times we played lethargic football,” he said. “That will not cut it next Saturday. Part of the issue probably rests on my shoulders; we were not prepared as well as we should have been. Our focus was not up to par.
“Our first-quarter play was exceptional on both sides of the ball, but the next three quarters were a bit underwhelming,” added Morelli.
Warren ran right down the field to start the game with Ethan Senz rushing for a 7-yard touchdown and Tommy Nyquist a 26-yard score on Warren’s second possession.
In fact, Senz had a run of 31 yards, Sam Harvey a 40-yard scamper, and Nyquist runs of 24 and 26 in the first half.
Senz’ second score was a 9-yard run and put Warren up 20-0 in the first half.
Corry quarterback Nathan Lesher didn’t connect on many passes, but when he did, they led to scores. A 58-yard pass play to Ethyn Allen led to Lesher’s 2-yard score before halftime.
Warren put the game away with two third-quarter scores. Ben White was open several times deep and finally connected with quarterback Eric Dippold on a 61-yard catch and run at 4:21 of the third. White took a kickoff 85 yards for a TD, but it was called back for an illegal block.
Nyquist’s second score with 44 seconds left in the third quarter made it 32-6 Warren.
Warren completed just three passes, but really didn’t need to. Nyquist finished with 132 yards on just 13 carries, Senz 65 yards on eight carries, and Sam Harvey 52 yards on eight carries.
Warren played the subtitutes for most of the fourth quarter. Other than a fourth-quarter score after a punt was returned to Warren’s 4-yard line, the Dragons were never in danger.
Justice Greene had two first-half sacks and a pass batted down, and Carson Farr a sack late in the game.
Early in the second half, Derek McMeans stripped Lesher after a long run and Nyquist recovered the fumble. Tristan Dolan forced a turnover on downs with a fourth-down tackle, and Carter Pascuzzi intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter.
“A win is a win, enjoy it for 24 hours then we get prepared for the playoffs and General McLane,” said Morelli.
