Swimmer of the Year

Warren’s Beyer receives Region 3’s top honor; Madigan, Harrison also recognized

Times Observer File Photo Warren’s Katie Beyer, pictured above, was named the District 10 Region 3 girls Swimmer of the Year on Friday.

To call it a banner year for Warren Area High School swimming and diving is an understatement.

You can’t do much better than three different Dragons winning District 10 championships, and one winning the program’s first ever state title.

So, having those three on the District 10 Region 3 all-star teams is icing on the cake.

Katie Beyer had her own day at Warren Area High School in honor of her winning the 200-yard freestyle at the PIAA 2A Championships — in school record time, no less — so her being named region Swimmer of the Year is deserving.

Unlike region all-star teams in other sports, swimming is more cut and dried; the teams are named based on regular season swim times.

Times Observer File Photo Warren's Hugh Harrison was named a second-team all-star in the 200 individual medley.

Beyer has broken her own school record in the 200 freestyle on multiple occasions, and won the PIAA title in 1:53.06 as a junior.

“This was my best time in my lifetime,” Beyer said then. She broke the record of 1:53.61 she had set at this year’s D10 championships.

To put a cherry on top, Beyer was not only named region Swimmer of the Year and first-team all-star by time in the 200 free, and in the 100 free.

In a region littered with McDowell and Villa Maria swimmers and divers, Beyer was first team in two events, and junior Katie Madigan a first-team honoree in diving. Madigan won her first D10 title this season, and also has her name in the WAHS record books.

Warren’s third individual D10 title came from a freshman on the boys team, Hugh Harrison, who was a second-team all-star in the 200 individual medley. He will take it, considering he won the championship in the same event. He has the school record in that event, but the motivation to do more in the next three years.

“Our three region all-stars are definitely deserving,” said Warren coach Russ Beyer. “They worked very hard and were extremely focused. It is based on regular-season results and swimming is a sport that is more geared for the postseason. So to accomplish such accolades represents the success they each had throughout the entire season.”
