Family matters Dear Editor, Have we had enough? Mass shootings daily, abortion debate, hate, violent movies and what else? When can we start thinking about solving the basic problem? Possibly today! Back to back issues of the Times Observer on June 1 and June 2 supply the major supply of ammunition needed to stop the degradation of America. A cartoon in first issue by Stiglich is headed, “Good Parenting in America” and the following day a column by Star Parker entitled, “Gun laws will not fix a problem of culture and spirit” prompted by an article in the Wall Street ...

Who’s ‘vulnerable?’ Dear Editor, In regard to the far-left liberal columnist Kathleen Parker’s opinion piece (June 1), I would like to comment on her quote: “When grade school children are vulnerable to mass murders, what’s the point of government?” I would like to reply: “When unborn, helpless and defenseless children are vulnerable to mass murders and their cohorts like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi allowing and endorsing such Satanic barbaric practices called abortion, what’s the point of government.” Sadly even my own Bishop Lawrence Persico reportedly is a ...

A wrong impression Dear Editor, I am writing a letter of apology to a motorist I met on the Fifth Avenue bridge this morning of May 27. I was walking on the highway part of the bridge toward Conewango Avenue picking up litter, including a penny. I had the penny in my left hand when a motorist came toward me. I waved to the motorist with my left hand and noticed it could have looked like an unkind gesture as only my thumb and index finger were showing. It bothers me a lot that the motorist may have, and probably got the wrong idea. I would never give this gesture to anyone, so ...

Adding safeguards

Dear Editor, My father owned a gun shop. When I was 7 years old, he taught me how to shoot starting with the most difficult action, the pump, then the bolt and finally the lever action. Today, I own a shotgun, a rifle and a hundgun, which I have a permit to carry. In addition to what is currently agreed upon by both political parties, I would suggest raising the age of purchase. Require more than three references and increase the time to pick up the approved purchase to 25 days. Any rebuttals? Sugar Grove

The flaws of ‘militia’

Dear Editor, So let’s talk about this “well regulated militia, essential to the security of a free state” behind the firearms free for all in America. Yes, a band of farmers and villagers did very bravely stand up to British regulars at Lexington and Concord. Beginning and end of the myth. When the British surrendered at Yorktown, Cornwallis’ 9,000 troops were facing 8,000 experienced America troops — not militia — and 8,000 French regulars. British reinforcements at sea were blocked by a French fleet, manned by French non-militia, sailors. At the start of the ...

Different transaction

Dear Editor, So this has been bugging me for a couple of weeks now. First Penn DOT tells the commissioners that the roundabout is a done deal and nothing can change it. Since when does a city take orders from someone other than who runs it? Next we see they don’t even have the job bid out yet, so nothing will happen till 2023. So again I ask: if nothing has been done and they have no one to do the job and people of this town don’t want or need the change, then why can’t we take the lesser of two evils and pay Penn DOT what ever they have actually spent on this all ready ...
