RDA considering legal action on blighted properties
Blighted properties with unresponsive owners can leave officials with few options.
That was made plain during Tuesday’s Warren County Redevelopment Authority meeting when the board discussed a Pleasant Twp. property at 1465 Route 62.
RDA chair Phil Gilbert said that 2022 taxes were paid which kept it out of the tax sale.
“(We) keep kicking this one down the road,” he said, noting that the RDA keeps raising “pitchforks and yelling.”
Commissioner Dan Glotz noted that the porch on the back side of the house is falling in while Chief Clerk Pam Matve noted that “garbage was a big part of it.”
Matve noted that Pleasant is not part of the landbank, so transferring the property to that entity isn’t an option. She said the RDA’s next option would be to seek conservatorship through the legal system.
RDA member Jeff Labesky suggested the township be invited to the next meeting.
“They’re the ones that should be taking first steps in regards to that, not us,” he said.
“(I’m) not really sure what that will accomplish,” Gilbert said.
Ultimately, the RDA agreed to send a final letter to the owner, stating that the conservatorship process is the next step should the lack of response continue.
A similar step was taken by the Warren County Landbank regarding 106 Cottage Place in Pine Grove Township.
Matve said that the township is not willing to participate in cleaning up the property.
