Arch Builders Day set for October 28 in St. Louis

Photo courtesy of Warren County Visitors Bureau Retired boilermakers and out-of-town visitors celebrated Arch Builders Day in 2022 at the Baby Arch at Warren County Visitors Bureau. This year’s event is set for Oct. 28.

Men who worked on the Gateway Arch in St. Louis will gather later this month for Arch Builders Day.

The Committee of Retired Boilermakers will be holding the annual event on Monday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Warren County Visitors Bureau in Starbrick.

The stainless-steel exterior of the arch was constructed at Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company (PDM) in Warren by local boilermakers and opened in 1965.

Walt Atwood said that those invited include former PDM employees, “especially those from the Warren shop who worked on the Arch project 1962-65” as well as other PDM employees, contractors and their families. Boilermakers from other Warren area shops and all past members of Boilermakers Union Local 659 are invited.

“We will meet to discuss the Arch project, as well as everyone’s experiences as Boilermakers,” Atwood said.

McDonald Construction Company of St. Louis won the bid for the construction of the Arch and sub-contracted the exterior construction to PDM.

Project leaders checked other PDM facilities before deciding on Warren.

PDM workers went to St. Louis for reunion events in 2012, 2015 and 2018. Organizers previously told the Times Observer that the reunions provide a way for Warren’s PDM boilermakers to meet and connect with others who worked on the arch.

Those with questions are asked to call Ed Atwood, CORB volunteer at (814) 726-2774.

Starting at $3.50/week.
