Football team mergers approved
There will be varsity football at Mike Shine Field in Youngsville and junior high football on the mountain in Sheffield.
The home teams at those venues will be Dragons.
Only 10 students came out for the junior high team at Sheffield Area Middle High School.
“We had to make the decision to combine them,” Director of Administrative Support Services Gary Weber said at Monday’s school board committee meetings. “We combined them with Beaty” Warren Middle School.
Of the students who signed up to play at Sheffield, most – six – went to practice on Monday, Weber said, and he expects two more to join the team.
Beaty already hosts the junior high football players out of Youngsville – another seven.
The addition of the Sheffield program means coaches will be able to split the Beaty squad into two teams, Weber said.
That will enable the teams to play Beaty’s existing District 10 schedule and Sheffield’s District 9 schedule.
“All of those kids are going to get a considerable amount of playing time,” Superintendent Amy Stewart said.
WAR MEMORIAL FIELD
War Memorial Field was available for Warren Area High School’s home varsity opener against Oil City. Because work on the track will be under way, it will not be available for the next home game.
“It needed to be turned back over,” Stewart said.
“They’re looking at playing the Girard game in Youngsville,” she said. “There’s a lot of moving around.”
