Have a goal for growth Dear Editor, Learning is a lifelong process! It is a bad day when one does not learn something new. The ability to improve and grow in knowledge is not limited to “school-aged students.” As a new year approaches, it is important to reflect on the past, and plan for the future. Take time to dream! Then make the dreams into a reality. Learn a new hobby. The best way to learn is by doing. “Become 1% better.” Atomic Habits by James Clear. May 2023 be a year of growth and learning for all who are willing to learn. Ann ...

Smell of leadership Dear Editor, The lingering stink of the authoritarian, sociopath 45th President and of his supporters stood in pungent contrast when Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington D. C. and addressed Congress in the same Capitol building Trump’s people stormed January 6, 2020. Zelensky, the 5-foot-7, raspy voiced, former television performer, is Time magazine’s 2022 Man of the Year. He is real. Trump posted phony Trump Time covers featuring himself in five of his golf clubs. Zelensky advocates democracy and cites the Ukrainians’ willingness to ...

Hidden angels Dear Editor, Recently I went to Dollar General in Market Street Plaza. I picked up a coffee mug, which will be a Christmas gift! I went to the cashier and forgot my money in the car. I immediately went out to get it! And a woman already had paid for it. I returned and saw her sitting in her car and told her I would pay it forward! The other day, I went to CVS to get Mucinex. I wore my mask and have been vaccinated! I had a severe case of the flu, but definitely needed the medicine! I went to use my debit card and provided my driver’s license knowing I had money in ...

Inconsistency at pump? Dear Editor, Wondering if anyone has an explanation on why our gasoline prices are so expensive? This weekend my daughter traveled from Pittsburgh to Russell. She purchased gasoline in Warren at $4.16 per gallon. She purchased gasoline in Slippery Rock for $ 3.18 per gallon. I have heard that we have higher prices because of Pa. taxes but, Slippery Rock is in the same state — 98 cents per gallon is an unbelievable difference. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the refineries a Merry Christmas. Oil on Tuesday was $74 per barrel. I checked the ...

Cyber schooling option Dear Editor, During Thanksgiving and the holiday season, I like to take time to reflect on the things in my life that I am grateful for. And this year, I want to share how thankful I am for cyber education. My children attend Reach Cyber Charter School, a unique, a tuition-free online public charter for students across Pennsylvania. We are completely in love with the curriculum and teachers. Our students are able to learn at a pace that meets their needs and allows them to thrive. The program allows my children to start their day when they are the most ...

Thompson brings ‘sadness’

Dear Editor: I am writing regarding recent actions and events in the life of our Congressman, Glenn Thompson (15th US District). On July 19 he voted against a Bill in the House of Representatives entitled the "Respect for Marriage Act." This bill's purpose was to protect the right to same-sex marriage federally and to require states to recognize this right. Three days later, on July 22, the Congressman attended his son's same-sex marriage. The Thompsons issued a statement that they were "thrilled to attend" the wedding and welcomed their new son-in-law into their family, stating they ...
