Sheffield takes on Cameron County tonight
Sheffield’s football team won its first game since 2019 in its season opener, but the reality is the Wolverines are 1-3 on a three-game losing streak heading to 3-2 Cameron County tonight.
Sheffield head coach Mike Barr has said his players have more to give, and the second half of Saturday’s 56-32 homecoming loss to Otto-Eldred/Oswayo Valley may have been the proof.
Trailing 44-0 at the half, Sheffield came out of the locker room and drove straight down the field, culminating with a Colby Barr touchdown run. Sheffield’s quarterback ended with over 100 yards on the ground and three total touchdowns. The Wolverines outscored O-E/OV 32-12 after intermission, and Barr hopes that carries over.
“Hopefully our kids took the second half and learned to play free,” said Barr, “play like they know they can. It definitely was a half to build off of. Hopefully they do.”
Sharing something in common, Cameron County is also coming off a loss to O-E/OV, 18-7 on Sept. 21 before a bye last week. Sophomore running back Kamden Fragale had 72 yards rushing and a touchdown in the loss, but he had 104 yards and a touchdown the previous week in a win over Smethport. And he’s not even the Raiders’ primary runner. Junior Malakai Zucal has rushed for 841 yards and seven touchdowns on 100 attempts.
Cameron County’s senior quarterback Ryder Brown has five touchdown passes — three to Koby Shepard — and six interceptions.
“Stopping the run is going to be key,” said Coach Barr. “They have a solid offense and run it well.”
