Warren wrestlers honored

KASEY KOPHAZY

Kasey Kophazy and Katie Seamens were among the very first District 10 champions in the PIAA’s newly-sanctioned sport of girls wrestling. Now, the Warren Area High School seniors have been named inaugural all-District 10 all-stars in female wrestling by the Erie Times-News.

It was July 1 when the PIAA officially sanctioned girls wrestling. Its first season concluded in early March at Hershey’s Giant Center, where the state’s first girls high school tourney took place amid a boys tournament that debuted in 1938.

Among 12 named to the all-District 10 girls wrestling team, Kophqzy was the inaugural D10 champ at 136 pounds, and Seamens at 148.

“Congratulations to both of them,” said Warren head varsity wrestling coach Glenn Baldensperger. “Kasey and Katie have been by each other’s side for the last three years. It really set the table for them with this being the first year for girls sanctioned wrestling in PA. Girls wrestling will continue to evolve and these two have set the bar pretty high. Congratulations to both of them and thanks to them and Kasey’s dad, Keith, for allowing me to be part of what they created the last two years.”

Despite going 0-2 at states, Kophazy was 21-15 on her senior season, finishing fourth at regionals. Seamens, also 0-2 at the very competitive PIAA meet, was 18-13 overall and was fourth at regionals to advance to states.

KATIE SEAMENS

“I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished,” said Seamens. “At the beginning of my career, I never thought I’d be awarded with this honor. It is a huge award to uphold, especially after the season and my career ended.”

Kophazy has a little sister, Jenna, who was second at the D10 meet and whose season ended at regionals, just short of the inaugural PIAA meet. Jenna Kophazy is a sophomore and has two more chances to advance.

“It truly means a lot to me that I would even be considered, let alone chosen to be on the first ever D10 women’s wrestling team,” said Kasey Kophazy. “If my 10th-grade self could see where I am today, I know she would be incredibly proud of how far we’ve come in just two years. Another showing of how my hard work has paid off and how we all have paved the way for future generations of female wrestlers.”

BOYS

For the second straight year, Warren wrestlers Ryan Fitzsimmons and Adika Fiscus have been named Region 3 all-stars.

Fitzsimmons, a senior at 121 pounds, was named to the Region 3 second team by the region’s coaches.

He finished 21-16 for the season. He was 2-2 and finished fifth at the Section 1 meet to advance to districts. He didn’t qualify for regionals, but did qualify for the regional tournament as a junior, finishing 42-42 in his varsity career.

Fiscus, a junior, was also named to the Region 3 second team after a 28-13 season in which he won two matches at 114 pounds and finished sixth at the District 10 2A tournament. He advanced to the Section 1 finals to advance to districts. He also qualified for regionals as a junior and has a 58-27 record after three seasons.

“Adika is for sure the leader in what a coach is looking for,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “He takes advantage of all the extra workouts and competitions he can get to. He has great support at home for him to get to these places, which takes time and commitment. Ryan has been right there the last two seasons, putting his time in and making improvements. Happy to say ‘two-time regional qualifier.'”
