Lady Dragons win 14th straight to move to D10 semifinals
ERIE — Warren head coach Lisa LaVan said the Dragons’ defense is the key in the District 10 4A playoffs. On Saturday, General McLane’s leading scorer Libby Opp scored just one basket in Warren’s 46-16 quarterfinal win at Mercyhurst University.
“We did a great job of executing our game plan,” said LaVan, whose Dragons won their 14th straight to improve to 19-4 overall. “Our defense was working well today. We take great pride in our defense and we are clicking right now.
“Meea (Irwin) and Alyssa (Farr) did a great job holding Opp to 2 points,” added LaVan. “She averages 17.”
Warren held the Lancers to single digits in each quarter, jumping out to a 13-2 first-quarter lead with Halle Kuzminski’s post bucket at the buzzer. By halftime, Warren led 26-8 and Kuzminski had scored 10 of her game-high 17 points (which outscored McLane’s team).
The senior Kuzminski added 12 rebounds, and Farr had two 3-pointers in each half and 8 points. Senior point guard Sammie Ruhlman finished with 6 points, six rebounds and seven assists, and Irwin and Alana Stuart added 6 points each in the win.
The Dragons — with a trip to states secure among the top four teams in 4A — advance to a semifinal playoff rematch with Harbor Creek (13-9) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mercyhurst University. The Huskies defeated Grove City, 55-33, on Saturday to advance to the semifinals. Harbor Creek and now junior 1,000-point scorer Brooke Przybylski defeated Warren, 55-44, in last year’s D10 4A playoffs.
Fairview (18-5) and Conneaut (16-7) will meet on the other side of the bracket at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Prep Hagerty Center in Erie.
