Win No. 250
Warren girls rally for coach’s milestone victory

ERIE — 250 wins is a lot of wins.
In Lisa LaVan’s 16 years as head coach of the Warren girls basketball program, her Dragons have won four District 10 championships and averaged 16 wins a season.
On Saturday, the Lady Dragons were focused on just one win, which would end a two-game skid. Warren scored the game’s final 14 points to overcome an eight-point deficit with 4:36 remaining, defeating host Erie High 40-34.
“They are relentless and, when they believe in themselves, they are dangerous,” said LaVan, whose Dragons are 3-2 overall. “It was a very physical game; always is up here. So proud of the resilience that this team showed. We were without Halle (Kuzminski) today, so that was a tough adjustment for us. This team is good — very good. They just need to believe in themselves more.”
The Dragons outscored Erie 14-3 in the fourth quarter.
“Alana (Stuart) and Meea (Irwin) were 2 for 2 each from the free throw line to tie it and then give us the lead,” said LaVan. “Sammie (Ruhlman) was 4 for 4 (at the line) to put the game away.”
Irwin scored six of her nine points in the fourth quarter, and Stuart four of her six points in the final frame.
“Alana stepped up to fill the spot of our post today,” said LaVan of Stuart with Kuzminski’s ankle injury. “She did great and led us in rebounds with 10. Emily Davidson got her first start today and she did great.”
Ruhlman led Warren with 11 points, Davidson contributed 8 points, Alyssa Farr 4 points and Irwin had nine rebounds.
Warren held Erie to one fourth-quarter field goal and the Royals were scoreless over the final several minutes.
“Somehow (we) pulled it off,” said LaVan, who is a career 250-118 over the 15-plus seasons.
“It is (a lot of wins),” she said. “Lots of great girls.
“It means a lot of long nights, a lot of film breakdown, not much sleep, and probably shaving a few years off my life with the stress,” added LaVan. “It is worth every ounce of it. I love working with these young ladies every day, and just using basketball as a tool to teach them life. If it is not hard, it is not worth it. It should be difficult. This is also 250 for every girl who has pushed with us in this program. It is (assistant coach) John White, who has been with me for each one. He has been a special man in my life.”
