Seneca’s Farrell too much for Knights

ERIE — The Eisenhower girls basketball team traveled to Seneca on Thursday night and the Bobcats handed the Knights their first loss of the season 47-39.

The Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Samantha Childs hit three quick buckets and scored 10 in the quarter on their way to a 13-11 lead.

The Bobcats started the second quarter with a pressing defense and held Eisenhower to only two points while they scored 10 to go up 21-15 at the half.

“We had way too many turnovers in the second quarter,” Knights head coach DJ Steinberg said. “We certainly didn’t help ourselves at all.”

Eisenhower came out in the second half and began pressing and it paid off, but the Knights could not close the gap and were behind 36-26 at the end of the third quarter.

The visitors managed to cut the lead to seven after a 3-pointer by Laney Belcher to close the deficit to 36-29, but they had no answer for Seneca freshman Haylee Farrell as she scored 22 points and was 7 of 8 from the charity stripe. The Knights hit three 3-point baskets in the quarter, but could never close the gap.

“We just made a lot of young-team type of mistakes tonight and the turnovers really hurt us. Combine that with the fact that they outplayed us on the boards, (it was) just a tough night for us. We know what we have to work on and be prepared for when they come to our place.”

Farrell led all scorers with 22 points, while Lainey Font led Eisenhower with 11 points.
