Dragons pick up big win

Warren beats defending 1A state champion in 5

GUYS MILLS — Losing the first set big on Wednesday and later trailing 2-1, Warren’s volleyball team bounced back to take the nonregion match 3-2 over host Maplewood.

“That was a big win for the team,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan of the Dragons’ 9-25, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24, 15-9 victory against last year’s 1A state champion. “Obviously, they could have folded after that first set, but they came right out in the second set and took the lead and held on. It was a dogfight from there; both teams fighting for every point the rest of the match.

“Summer Lucks played a great game on defense and serve-receive,” said Dolan. “The whole team stepped up the passing game; Lily (Walker) and Sophie (Walker) stepped up. Kylie (Fehlman) was terrific at the net, great presence and shotmaking. Lindsay (Madigan) keeps improving running the offense and Madelyn (Nosel), Maddy (Jones), Lilly (Newton), and Alexia (Bowers) took lots of big swings. Good non-region test that will help us going forward.”

Over the five sets, Fehlman had a monster 21 kills and five blocks; Jones 11 kills, nine digs and two aces; and Bowers and Nosel eight kills apiece. Bowers added seven digs, and Newton three kills and six digs. Madigan finished with 40 assists, 14 digs, four aces and two kills. Lucks had 33 digs, four assists and two aces for Warren (7-1). Lily Walker added two assists.

Warren’s JV lost 20-25, 17-25. Tori Solberg and Attie Corey had three kills apiece and Brooke Sherry two kills and four digs for Warren. Malysia Sorensen had five digs and Peyton Cabisca and Brynn Norris three assists apiece in the loss.
