Sheffield pins loss on Kane

KANE — After a weather-related postponement of Wednesday’s anticipated matchup, Sheffield and Kane faced off Thursday night and the Wolverines were able to pull off the 39-27 win.

Sheffield started out with a couple of wins via forfeit before freshman Zach Barnes gutted out a hard-fought match, defeating Blain Good 3-2, improving Barnes record to 9-12 on the season.

“Another inexperienced kid, wrestled with heart, and got the win,” said Sheffield head coach Tom Hold of Barnes.

Following a quick pin by Kane’s Reece Bechakas (16-2) over Jeremiah Richardson (2-9), Alex Marfink (7-9) took on Luke Ely (13-4). Ely was able to go up 5-0 in the first, add another six in the second, and finally pulled off the pin at 4:27.

“He wrestled hard,” said Holden of Marfink. “Alex wrestled with heart.”

At 215 pounds, down 21-15, Matt Lobdell (11-8) was able to pin Kane’s Evan Smith (2-12) to tie it up.

Both teams would trade wins by forfeit with a double forfeit in between, before A.J. Barnes (11-3) made quick work of Even Swanson (5-7), pinning the Kane sophomore in 55 seconds.

Sheffield tacked on another win by forfeit for good measure to pull out the victory.

The Wolverines are now 4-8 overall and 3-1 in the Allegheny Mountain League, just behind Port Allegany (4-0). Kane falls to 2-2 in the league. The Wolverines will compete in the Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City High School this weekend.
